Health Quality Transformation 2016

At a conference centred on health quality transformation, we welcome a globally-acknowledged leader of large scale change.

Helen Bevan, one of the most influential people in the history of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) Institute for Innovation and Improvement, has been at the forefront of NHS improvement initiatives that have bettered circumstances for thousands. We welcome her insights in anticipation of our own transformation.

In a co-authored paper, Bevan offers an approach focused on changing the conversations that shape everyday thinking and actions: “It is about bringing new, different and diverse voices into the change conversation. In the context of health and care, this creates the opportunity to include patients, families and community members in ways that we often haven’t engaged them before.”

In this spirit, we also welcome David Giuliano. He lives in Marathon, Ontario - a small town on the north shore of Lake Superior, a few hundred kilometres from Thunder Bay. But for a while, David lived part-time in Toronto, in order to receive radiation treatments. He speaks of his cancer as an unwelcome guest, and as a blessing, all at once.

We are fortunate to have David speak with us at what has become Canada’s largest conference on quality in health care. And this year, at Health Quality Transformation, David is joined by more than 25 other patients and caregivers. They have played an integral role in every aspect of the day, from planning to presenting.

They have helped in creating a day that embraces our vision for achieving a quality health system: Breakout sessions are aligned with Quality Matters – our framework for achieving a just, patient-centred health system committed to relentless improvement. This framework recognizes engaging patients and the public; redesigning the system to support quality care; helping professionals and caregivers thrive; ensuring technology works for all; supporting innovation and spreading knowledge; monitoring performance with quality in mind; and building a quality-driven culture.

Patients and caregivers are playing a key role in our efforts to help transform health care – and we are better for it.

We anticipate the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Eric Hoskins, will join us once again to speak about quality, Patients First, and to award the 2016 Minister’s Medal.

Bob Bell, deputy minister, will, too, provide us insights into our province’s recently-introduced legislation at what will be a very important day.

We hope you join us.
