Health Quality Transformation – North

For the first time, Health Quality Ontario held Health Quality Transformation 2017- North, with breakout sessions held in Thunder Bay and Sudbury at The Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Discussions were based on the Northern Ontario Health Equity Strategy.

Title:
Health Equity in Northern Ontario

Alain Gauthier, Associate Professor with the School of Human Kinetics, Faculty Investigator at the Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research (CRaNHR) at Laurentian University.


Session Description:
In spring 2016, Health Quality Ontario developed a Health and Health Care Equity Plan. One of the priorities of this Plan is to work in partnership with those living in the north to develop a Northern Ontario Health Equity Strategy. The priority areas of focus for this strategy are: Acting upon the social determinants of health, Equitable access to high quality and appropriate health services, Indigenous healing, health & wellbeing, and Evidence availability for equity decision making. Through a dynamic panel discussion, the areas of focus will be explored, and panelists will share insights, ideas and real life examples of how they have been activated to create meaningful change.

By attending this session, participants will:

  1. Learn about the areas of focus identified in the Northern Ontario Health Equity Strategy.

  2. Gain perspective from panelists with experience in each area of focus, highlighting strategies for action.

  3. Discuss the role of various organizations and leverage partnerships within and outside of the health care system required for intersectoral action on health equity issues.

Session Description:
As described in the morning panel session, one of the areas of focus of the Northern Ontario Health Equity Strategy is “timely and equitable access to high quality and appropriate health services”. One of the proposed solutions is “Coordination of Services and Sectors” which includes coordination of care between services, both within and outside the health care sector, emphasizing the need to address transitions for vulnerable populations.
