Nearly 8,000 Canadians die from hospital-acquired infections every year, and 220,000 more people become infected. Treatment costs are high: In 2010, treating infections cost the Canadian healthcare system $129 million. Ensuring the use of safe, effective and ethical infection prevention and control measures is an important healthcare goal.
