Introducing Our New Patient Advisors Council

Help improve Ontario’s health system for tomorrow.

This week, Health Quality Ontario (HQO) has launched its latest effort to include more patient and caregiver perspectives in health care quality improvement. I’d like to invite all Ontarians to consider getting involved in our new Patient, Family and Public Advisors Council.

We are currently recruiting people from across the province to join our Advisors Council. Anyone can volunteer, whether you’re a patient, a caregiver, or a member of the general public with a passion for health care. We would love to hear from you and incorporate your voices into the work that we do. Our only request is that you do not currently work in a health care organization. HQO will provide volunteers with opportunities to learn more about our health system, and any supports they might need in order to fully participate.

The Advisors Council will give people from all walks of life the opportunity to participate in our work and make recommendations to improve patient experiences and create better outcomes. We understand that patients and caregivers take many different forms – and we recognize the importance of such diversity. Here is an opportunity to come together with others to share your advice and insights into what a strong health system looks like to you. By working together we can encourage lasting change.

We are building on what many leading organizations are already doing: working directly with patients, families, caregivers, and the public to improve care. As a side note: If you’d like to read more about other engaging initiatives across the province, you can visit one of my earlier blogs, "Practicing Patient Engagement in a Meaningful Way".

Thank you for your help.

I recognize that volunteering is a commitment of time and energy. But it’s important. Every person, story, experience, and piece of advice we can gather truly does make a difference in the work we do, whether it’s helping to make our reports on the health system clearer and more relevant to the public, or contributing to our recommendations about what health treatments and technologies should be available in Ontario.

Thank you for considering to help us to improve the quality of health care in Ontario.
