Health Quality Ontario supports hospitals to improve surgical care in Ontario through the Ontario Surgical Quality Improvement Network. This network provides support and resources to a community of surgical teams across the province who are working together to achieve long-term surgical quality improvement goals and deliver improved experiences and outcomes for patients.
A key component of participating in the network is the implementation of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program which was created by the American College of Surgeons. Health Quality Ontario introduced the program at scale in Ontario to provide hospitals with a surgical quality improvement program that delivers better patient outcomes, shortened hospital-stays, and between 250 and 500 fewer surgical complications per year.
Hospital teams participating in the Ontario Surgical Quality Improvement Network also:
Have access to an online collaborative space where surgical teams can discuss best practices, share innovations and discover ways of improving surgical care in Ontario
Collect high-quality clinical data on surgical outcomes using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, which then provides feedback to surgeons on risk-adjusted outcomes to identify areas for improvement
Benchmark surgical outcomes and contribute to the comparison of outcomes across Ontario
Are empowered to implement quality improvement initiatives
Establish long-term and meaningful quality improvement goals
