This quality standard addresses care for people 15 years of age and older with acute pain who have been prescribed or are considering opioids. It applies to all care settings. It does not address opioid prescribing for chronic pain or end-of-life care, or address opioid use disorder.
In addition to this quality standard, Health Quality Ontario has developed two other quality standards related to opioids: Opioid Prescribing for Chronic Pain and Opioid Use Disorder (Opioid Addiction).
The work on this quality standard started in July 2016.
