Patient engagement is an important part of a high-functioning, quality health system. Patient engagement means patients, their caregivers and families, and health care providers actively collaborating to improve Ontario’s health system.

Building on leading research and consultations with people from across the province, Health Quality Ontario has developed a new framework for patient engagement.

Use the framework to better understand the meaning and key principles for patient engagement, and the practices you can use to do it.

The framework also explains:

  • The different levels of care that engagement can take place at – at the direct care level, organizational level and provincial level

  • The types of engagement practices and models to use at each level

  • Key considerations before, during and after a patient engagement project or activity
